Thinking About Starting a Blog?

I have been wanting to write this post for a while now and I hope it's one that people find useful. I have had quite a few messages on social media over the past few months in regards to starting a blog and some tips and pointers on what it's like to run a blog. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to sit down and write up some of my thoughts and feelings when it comes to starting a blog. I have learnt quite a few things from running my blog so I feel like this would be a good time to share some of my opinions. As always, these are my own thoughts and I'm not saying they will work for everyone, but I just wanted to share some pointers for anyone who is thinking about starting their own blog or are just interested in knowing a little bit more...

You have to be starting it for the right reason

This one is probably one of the most important things for sure! If you are wanting to start a blog because you see bloggers being sent free things and and want to earn money from posting pictures on Instagram...then there's no point even starting. If you start a blog for reasons like this then I personally don't think you will get very far as people will soon see that there is no passion and realism behind the content that you create. I started my blog because I have a love for writing and photography and I was always so inspired by others people's blogs. Numbers and stats isn't the thing that drives me and my blog, I love running it and that's whats important. If you are looking for a creative outlet where you can share images, writing, film, inspiration...whatever you are wanting to talk about and share with the world, a blog is a perfect place to do this. I think having a passion for a particular subject is always a good starting point. This could be beauty, film, food, travel, fashion...the list is endless! Starting with something you know you love and can feel creative with will always be a good place to start and from there you can discover different topics that you want to write about.

You don't need fancy equipment

This is one of the key things that I am always telling people as I think the impression of the equipment that Bloggers needs is varied. Some people don't want to start a blog because they don't have an expensive camera, photographer, fancy laptop and so on. If you have some amazing equipment, then great, you will be able to use this to help you create some really amazing stuff. But, if all you have is a phone and a free editing app, then that works too! You can still create some amazing and inspirational content so easily. I often use my Iphone to take Instagram pictures or blog photos and I always edit everything on my phone. The current apps that I am using to edit are VSCO and Light-room. These are both free apps that you can download and work perfectly for me! One piece of equipment that I would recommend if you're like me and don't always have someone around to help you take photos...a tripod. I use my tripod all the time and find it so useful. I bought an adaptor off amazon for my tripod which allows my phone to be attached and this was a great find. It allows me to take Instagram pictures with my phone and is a great little set up. I think that the perception of needing very expensive equipment is varied. I think that it's not a mandatory thing and people can 100% run a blog without it. I do think that nice equipment can create some really beautiful content but it's all down to the person and what they currently have or what they can afford. You need to decide what will work best for you and don't feel pressured into buying things because you think you need it. There are always cheaper alternatives that can work just as well!

A creative mind is key

A big thing behind any blog is creativity. It's something that I absolutely love and hate at the same time. Creativity allows me to share so many amazing images or blog posts on a weekly basis and being creative is my strong point. I think it's the main drive that you need in order to run a blog as you are always having to come up with new ideas for posts, goal setting, Instagram pictures, advice, and so on. But at the same time, having a creative block is one of the most frustrating things but also completely normal. Everyone goes through a creative block from time to time and the best thing to do is take a step back, go and focus on something else and come back to it at another time. I find that sometimes I can't think of a single thing to write about and other times I have hundreds of ideas that all come to me at once. There is no in between for me! Having that creative instinct will defiantly be beneficial in the blogging world and people will really notice it. Having that eye for a good flat-lay or the right Instagram spot will always be useful when it comes to running a blog. One problem that I have with creativity is that I can always envision an Instagram photo in my head of how I want it to look and trying to explain this to someone else has got to be one of the hardest things! Creativity also doesn't have to be something done alone. Bouncing off the ideas of other people and hearing other people's view on things is always a helpful tool when it comes to writing or coming up with new ideas.

There are no rules with your own blog

The perfect thing about running your own blog is that you get to decide on how things are done and what you want to create. There is no one telling you what to do and all the decisions come down to you. This is one of my favourite things about running a blog because I am very much an independent worker and prefer to work on my own ideas solo. I feel like I work a lot better this way and it doesn't matter how things are done because it was my decision. There will always be a trial and error aspect due to it all being down to one person but this is defiantly something that is needed in order to find what's right for your blog. No matter how you want to do things, it doesn't matter what anybody else wants you to do because you are doing it because it makes you happy. Yes, I agree that feedback from your readers from time to time is very useful as you can make small amendments and tweaks to improve but overall, you should never have to completely change how you want to do things. You get to decide on how many times a week you post, which social media platforms you want to share on, how the post will look, what photos to include and every other decision that comes along with running a blog. It's all down to you about how it's run and the decisions that are made and I think it's a great positive for having your own blog.

Be your own boss

Think ones links in nicely to the previous point but I also wanted to include this point from a different perspective. As well as being able to make your own decisions and allowing yourself to decide on how things are run, being your own boss includes some other aspects as well. Being your own boss means you have to motivate yourself to make sure things are done and completed. It means you have to push yourself to spend the time on your blog and making sure that you work hard at it. There will always be a moment when running a blog where you feel like you want to give happens to all of us! But it only means you have to pick yourself back up and come back stronger. I took a few months off my blog last year and although it was a long time to be away from the blog, it was exactly what I needed in order to get my motivation and love back for my blog! Setting yourself a clear plan in your head is always a good place to start when it comes to your blog. I have a bit of a routine for my blog work and this works really well for me in terms of keeping up with everything and making sure I get a post up every week. I usually dedicate Sunday to writing, Saturday for Instagram photos, anytime of the day for ideas and a few nights before bed catching up on everyone else's blogs. It's important to make the time for the blog but also remember that it is really difficult to run a blog alongside a full time job, social life, etc. The good thing about being your own boss is that you get to choose what works best for you and your lifestyle. If you only have time to post once a month then that's fine...that works for you! Don't beat yourself up about not posting so many times a week because there are no set standards in the blogging world, everyone runs their blog differently and what works for them.

Inspiration is everywhere

One of my favourite things about the blogging world is the inspiration. There are so so many great bloggers out there who are taking the world by storm. I get so much inspiration on a daily basis by scrolling through Instagram, watching YouTube videos, going through Instagram stories, reading blog posts and so much more. The Blogging world has really taken off and some of the things that people are now! Bloggers are starting to really build their own brands and showing the world what we can do. It's such an inspiring community to be apart of and I will always agree that it's one of my favourite parts about blogging. If you're thinking about starting a blog because you are feeling inspired by other Bloggers...I don't blame you! If you're unsure if you defiantly want to start a blog or not then looking through loads of other blogs is a great way to make a decision. You will get a feel for the kind of things you want to write and the style you want to go with for your own blog. You can get some inspiration for blog post ideas as well as photo ideas. I thought that I would let you know about some of my favourite bloggers at the minute who are inspiring me on a daily basis. In The Frow, Lydia Elise Millen, Beth Sandland, Em Sheldon, Maria J, Forever September and so many more. These are just a few amazing girls who run some really great blogs but there are so many out there. I think there is a blog to cover just about any topic! As well as great blogs, there are also a lot of great Instagram accounts out there! Instagram is my favourite social media platform and is a really great way to help promote your blog and your following.

Support is the best thing to have

In order to start a blog, I think having the best support around you is really helpful and so important. Whether this is one person or ten people, it doesn't matter on the quantity. I find having really supportive friends around me so great for keeping my mind set positive about my blog. My friends are always asking questions about my ideas for my blog, always reading my posts, always liking my Instagram pictures and are overall really supportive girls. It 100% makes a difference for me personally as it helps me to feel more motivated and confident with the things that I am working on. I think having negative people around you when you are trying to pursue something you love is a combination that will never work. If the people around you aren't being supportive of the idea of you starting a blog, then I would question why they are around you. Supportive people is what you need! Even if someone doesn't understand the blogging world, then this shouldn't matter. If it's something that you want to start and have a go at, then that's all that's important. It took me months and months to actually start my blog because I was so worried about what other people would think. Now I can see that I have come so far because I couldn't care less! If it's what I want to write about or post, then that's fine with me. If people don't like what you're doing then that's their own opinion. I think surrounding yourself with the right people will always help your confidence in yourself and your blog. There will always be at least one person who doesn't like what you're doing but that's life and some people are like that. The blogging community is super supportive and you will always have the support online! Supporting other bloggers is a massive thing I will always stand by as I know how much hard work and effort goes into every post, every picture, every idea and so much more!

Go with your gut

Finally, I think this is an important last pointer for anyone thinking about starting your own blog. I would say, that if you have been thinking about if for a while and have so many ideas of what you could write about and share...then do it! It doesn't matter if you're not 100% sure on the platform to use, how often you should post, if people will be interested or not...these are things that you can either learn along the way or get so much advice for from other bloggers. I personally feel like Bloggers are the most helpful community in terms of quick responses and any blogging questions you may have. Don't feel afraid to ask! I am always happy to answer any questions that people have and usually people just message me on Instagram...I love helping you guys out. I knew in my gut that I would love running a blog and it's the best decision I have ever made. I absolutely love it and I'm so happy that I did decide to go with my gut instinct. I know sometimes it can be easier said than done, but if you feel like it's the right step for you then you should defiantly start! Nothing will be perfect in the beginning, it takes time to find your writing style, audience, image creativity, etc. You need time to develop your blog and slowly things will fall into place. There are so many amazing advice blog posts, free apps, great platforms and a great community out there to help you get started with your blog. If it's been on your mind for a while, then I would just say go for it! You can always delete your blog if it's not right for you. But I guarantee you won't regret it if it's something that has been on your mind for a whole and you're already feeling so inspired by other blogs!

So there we have it! A round up of tips, pointers, thoughts and feelings on starting a blog! I really hope that at least one person found this post useful...then I would be happy! If any of you have any questions at all in regards to blogging, a specific platform or app, need inspiration, and so on...then please don't hesitate to send me a message on social media or leave a comment below. I am always more than happy to answer any questions people have. Whether that's how to start a blog to what's your favourite lipstick at the moment! These are questions I answer all the time and I love it! I am super happy that I finally got round to writing this post as I know some of you have been asking for it. I feel like I have learnt quite a lot in the years that I have spent blogging, but I'm sure there is still a lot more for me to learn and still a long long way for me to go!

I will be back again next week with a brand new post...

Kellie xx
