My Guide To Taking a Flatlay

Lately, I have really been enjoying taking flat lays to use on my Instagram and I feel like slowly, I am getting the hang of it! Quite a few of you have been asking about how I set up my flat lays and my decisions behind it, so hopefully today's post will answer some of your questions! Today's post is a little round up of my step to step guide on taking a flat lay, the thought and ideas that go behind it and also answering some of the most common questions that I get asked about this particular topic. Today's post is sponsored by Panasonic.

Choosing your setup

Choosing what equipment you are going to shoot with and where you are going to shoot a flat lay is always the best way to start. You need to decide if you are going to be shooting with your phone or with a camera. I use both options when it comes to flat lays depending on what I'm shooting and what kind of quality I want for the image. Some images will look great if I take them on my phone but if I am wanting to capture a sharper image with lots of detail, I will often use my camera as I know I can get a clean shot. When setting up my flat lay, I always need to decide if I am using my tripod or not. Again, this depends on what kind of image you are shooting. If I am going to be involved in the frame in some way, then I won't use a tripod. But if it's just a shot of products, then I will always use my tripod as it works a lot better to get a stable and focused image. I can attach my phone and my camera to my tripod, so this works really well for me. I personally like to capture a few video clips as well as still pictures for my flat lays because I think this works well to share on my Instagram stories to go into more depth about a certain product or campaign. Panasonic offer some really great cameras if you are looking for something new to add to your camera collection or they also offer an amazing Mirrorless Camera if you are interested in capturing the video shots. Once the technical part is set up, then this is where the creativity starts.

Decide on the style of the image

Making a decision on what you are going to shoot and having a vision of how you are wanting the flat lay is a starting point for most images and will help everything get rolling. I always have an idea of how I want the image to turn out, even before I have started shooting anything. If I know what product I am going to be shooting, then this helps me come up with ideas for the overall style of the shot. For example, If I have decided to shoot a flat lay where the main focus is a book, then I will plan everything else around this item, even down to the editing style. I personally think that there needs to be a theme with your flat lay and everything needs to fit into one. I often find it useful to work with colours as this can help an image blend together nicely. The style of the flat lay is a really important aspect. Is it going to be modern, clean, colourful, busy, basic, and so on. There are so many different options when it comes to shooting your flat lay and this is something that I really love about taking these types of images. I love being creative so having opportunities like this to create an image that is fit for Instagram, then this is something that I really enjoy doing and creating. If you are used to the Blogging world, then you will more than likely already have a vision in your head of how you want this flat lay to look and this is always a benefit.

Thinking About Starting a Blog?

I have been wanting to write this post for a while now and I hope it's one that people find useful. I have had quite a few messages on social media over the past few months in regards to starting a blog and some tips and pointers on what it's like to run a blog. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to sit down and write up some of my thoughts and feelings when it comes to starting a blog. I have learnt quite a few things from running my blog so I feel like this would be a good time to share some of my opinions. As always, these are my own thoughts and I'm not saying they will work for everyone, but I just wanted to share some pointers for anyone who is thinking about starting their own blog or are just interested in knowing a little bit more...

You have to be starting it for the right reason

This one is probably one of the most important things for sure! If you are wanting to start a blog because you see bloggers being sent free things and and want to earn money from posting pictures on Instagram...then there's no point even starting. If you start a blog for reasons like this then I personally don't think you will get very far as people will soon see that there is no passion and realism behind the content that you create. I started my blog because I have a love for writing and photography and I was always so inspired by others people's blogs. Numbers and stats isn't the thing that drives me and my blog, I love running it and that's whats important. If you are looking for a creative outlet where you can share images, writing, film, inspiration...whatever you are wanting to talk about and share with the world, a blog is a perfect place to do this. I think having a passion for a particular subject is always a good starting point. This could be beauty, film, food, travel, fashion...the list is endless! Starting with something you know you love and can feel creative with will always be a good place to start and from there you can discover different topics that you want to write about.

You don't need fancy equipment

This is one of the key things that I am always telling people as I think the impression of the equipment that Bloggers needs is varied. Some people don't want to start a blog because they don't have an expensive camera, photographer, fancy laptop and so on. If you have some amazing equipment, then great, you will be able to use this to help you create some really amazing stuff. But, if all you have is a phone and a free editing app, then that works too! You can still create some amazing and inspirational content so easily. I often use my Iphone to take Instagram pictures or blog photos and I always edit everything on my phone. The current apps that I am using to edit are VSCO and Light-room. These are both free apps that you can download and work perfectly for me! One piece of equipment that I would recommend if you're like me and don't always have someone around to help you take photos...a tripod. I use my tripod all the time and find it so useful. I bought an adaptor off amazon for my tripod which allows my phone to be attached and this was a great find. It allows me to take Instagram pictures with my phone and is a great little set up. I think that the perception of needing very expensive equipment is varied. I think that it's not a mandatory thing and people can 100% run a blog without it. I do think that nice equipment can create some really beautiful content but it's all down to the person and what they currently have or what they can afford. You need to decide what will work best for you and don't feel pressured into buying things because you think you need it. There are always cheaper alternatives that can work just as well!

The Perfect Film Day: Take 1

Happy Sunday everyone! Today I am starting a new series on my blog which has been something I have been meaning to do for a while. I always get messages about recommendations of films to watch so I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to start a series all about my film choices! As a lot of you will already know, I am a huge film lover and go to the cinema every week. I am always buying and watching new films all the time. I wanted to start this series to share my love for films and give some of you some ideas of what to watch next. I have decided to recommend any films that I currently have on DVD, so this will be including old and new films and mix of genres. As this if the first of the series, if there is anything specific you want me to include or change, then please let me know. I will be including 6 films in each blog post and will be posting these blog posts monthly.

1. The Feel Good Musical

Of course I had to start this blog post with a musical...who doesn't love a musical? La La Land is a film that a lot of people will have heard of! But, surprisingly I know a lot of people who still haven't seen this film yet. La La Land stars Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone...aka the dream acting combination. I think these two are great in any film that they do together, so when I heard they were starring in a musical, I was very excited! This film is such a feel good film and I agree when people say that they don't make film's like this anymore. It is such a classic and the whole style of the film is different to anything that I have seen in a long time. They are both super talented and I know this is a film that I can watch a million times over. This film is about Mia and Sebastian who are trying to pursue their Hollywood dreams. Mia as an actress and Sebastian as a Jazz musician. I know that this film has won lots of awards and I can 100% see why. Defiantly one to watch if you love a musical and fancy a feel good film. Plus...it has Ryan Gosling in it, so who wouldn't want to see that!

2. A True Story Film Always Gets Me

This next film is one that I have only just got round to seeing as I missed it when it was out in the cinema. This film again stars two of my favourite actors. This film is called Adrift and stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. I had seen the trailer for this quite a lot before this came out and I knew that I would love it. It's based on a true story and I am a sucker for this type of film! The story is about a couple who set out to sail across the ocean and got caught in one of the biggest hurricanes in recorded history. The film is about how they met and how they deal with the aftermath of the hurricane. It's such a beautiful film and will be one that I am recommending. The story is truly amazing and so inspiring! The way they have done this film is so powerful and I think the two actors were the perfect choice for the part! I think a lot of you will really love this film so I wanted to include it in today's post.

My Nana...The Memories and The Things She Taught Me

Today is quite a special post for me as it is dedicated to my amazing Nana...Today marks 7 years since my Nana passed away so I thought it would be an amazing idea to write up a blog post. Not only is this post special to me...the images included in this post are too! My cousin had found one of my Nana's dresses that she used to wear and as soon as she showed me, I knew I had to take some images wearing it and this is where the idea for the post started! The fact that I got to wear a dress that belonged to my Nana is really amazing for me and it was the perfect outfit to get some amazing photo's for this really special post.

My Nana was a pretty amazing women that everyone loved. She seemed to be known by everyone! She loved Ireland, painting, going out on her bike and gardening. The list is endless. She was a family lady through and through. My family is a big family and we are all quite close so when my Nana passed away, it hit us all quite hard. Loosing someone in your family is a difficult thing for anyone to go through and I was considering including in the post about how this made an impact on me and my family. But, I wanted to focus on my Nana's personality, the things she taught me and some amazing memories.
