International Women's Day: Why Leading Ladies Inspire Me

Today is one of my favourite days of the year...International Women's Day! I knew that I wanted to do something creative this year for my blog and I have really enjoyed creating this post for you today. I have been working with my talented photographer Josey to create some really cool shots to be included in today's post. Today I have rounded up all the reasons as to why leading ladies inspire me so much to celebrate International Women's Day. Whether this is in a movie, in my family, somebody online, a friend...it could be anyone who inspires me! There's nothing like being a strong independent woman...am I right?

'Don't forget to fall in love with yourself first.' Carrie Bradshaw

'Good Morning Angels. Good Morning Charlie.' Charlies Angels

'Whoever said orange was the new pink was seriously disturbed.' Elle Woods

Seeing strong women in the film world playing leading roles is my absolute favourite. If a film has a bad ass, strong and incredible female leading character, then I know it's going to be good! We have started to see more and more of these characters taking to the screen and I think it sends out such an amazing message. There are so many female characters who we have seen on screen that I find so inspirational and love to watch in the films. Since I am such a huge film fan, I thought that it was only right to shoot some images for today's post inspired by some of my favourite female characters. I decided to pick Elle Woods from Legally Blonde, Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City and the ladies from Charlies Angels. These characters haven been an inspiration to me in the film world and I really love the characters that they play! Elle Woods has style, passion, confidence, motivation, aspirations and so much more! She is such an iconic character that everyone loves. Carrie Bradshaw is also another iconic character known for her style! She has been a leading lady that I loved for years and I find her character so inspiring. Hard working, passionate, determined and so classy. Finally, the ladies of Charlies Angels are epic. They are so bad ass, powerful, clever and so gorgeous. I have always loved the films are they are such empowering women!

There are so many different female characters out there that people find inspiring for many different reasons. Seeing ladies lead the film world is such an amazing thing to see and it makes me really happy that these ladies are getting the opportunities like this and having the chance to play some really iconic characters. Captain Marvel is one that I am really exited to see this month! There are already some amazing women within the Marvel universe, but Captain Marvel is one to have her very own film and is going to be an iconic character for sure! Ladies can be super heroes just as much as men! I would be so interested to hear all about your favourite iconic leading ladies of the screen. There are so many that I love but I bet there are so many that I haven't heard of before which means more films for me to watch! If you're wanting to feel inspired and empowered, then I 100% recommend watching a film which has an amazing female character in!

My Guide To Taking a Flatlay

Lately, I have really been enjoying taking flat lays to use on my Instagram and I feel like slowly, I am getting the hang of it! Quite a few of you have been asking about how I set up my flat lays and my decisions behind it, so hopefully today's post will answer some of your questions! Today's post is a little round up of my step to step guide on taking a flat lay, the thought and ideas that go behind it and also answering some of the most common questions that I get asked about this particular topic. Today's post is sponsored by Panasonic.

Choosing your setup

Choosing what equipment you are going to shoot with and where you are going to shoot a flat lay is always the best way to start. You need to decide if you are going to be shooting with your phone or with a camera. I use both options when it comes to flat lays depending on what I'm shooting and what kind of quality I want for the image. Some images will look great if I take them on my phone but if I am wanting to capture a sharper image with lots of detail, I will often use my camera as I know I can get a clean shot. When setting up my flat lay, I always need to decide if I am using my tripod or not. Again, this depends on what kind of image you are shooting. If I am going to be involved in the frame in some way, then I won't use a tripod. But if it's just a shot of products, then I will always use my tripod as it works a lot better to get a stable and focused image. I can attach my phone and my camera to my tripod, so this works really well for me. I personally like to capture a few video clips as well as still pictures for my flat lays because I think this works well to share on my Instagram stories to go into more depth about a certain product or campaign. Panasonic offer some really great cameras if you are looking for something new to add to your camera collection or they also offer an amazing Mirrorless Camera if you are interested in capturing the video shots. Once the technical part is set up, then this is where the creativity starts.

Decide on the style of the image

Making a decision on what you are going to shoot and having a vision of how you are wanting the flat lay is a starting point for most images and will help everything get rolling. I always have an idea of how I want the image to turn out, even before I have started shooting anything. If I know what product I am going to be shooting, then this helps me come up with ideas for the overall style of the shot. For example, If I have decided to shoot a flat lay where the main focus is a book, then I will plan everything else around this item, even down to the editing style. I personally think that there needs to be a theme with your flat lay and everything needs to fit into one. I often find it useful to work with colours as this can help an image blend together nicely. The style of the flat lay is a really important aspect. Is it going to be modern, clean, colourful, busy, basic, and so on. There are so many different options when it comes to shooting your flat lay and this is something that I really love about taking these types of images. I love being creative so having opportunities like this to create an image that is fit for Instagram, then this is something that I really enjoy doing and creating. If you are used to the Blogging world, then you will more than likely already have a vision in your head of how you want this flat lay to look and this is always a benefit.

Thinking About Starting a Blog?

I have been wanting to write this post for a while now and I hope it's one that people find useful. I have had quite a few messages on social media over the past few months in regards to starting a blog and some tips and pointers on what it's like to run a blog. I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to sit down and write up some of my thoughts and feelings when it comes to starting a blog. I have learnt quite a few things from running my blog so I feel like this would be a good time to share some of my opinions. As always, these are my own thoughts and I'm not saying they will work for everyone, but I just wanted to share some pointers for anyone who is thinking about starting their own blog or are just interested in knowing a little bit more...

You have to be starting it for the right reason

This one is probably one of the most important things for sure! If you are wanting to start a blog because you see bloggers being sent free things and and want to earn money from posting pictures on Instagram...then there's no point even starting. If you start a blog for reasons like this then I personally don't think you will get very far as people will soon see that there is no passion and realism behind the content that you create. I started my blog because I have a love for writing and photography and I was always so inspired by others people's blogs. Numbers and stats isn't the thing that drives me and my blog, I love running it and that's whats important. If you are looking for a creative outlet where you can share images, writing, film, inspiration...whatever you are wanting to talk about and share with the world, a blog is a perfect place to do this. I think having a passion for a particular subject is always a good starting point. This could be beauty, film, food, travel, fashion...the list is endless! Starting with something you know you love and can feel creative with will always be a good place to start and from there you can discover different topics that you want to write about.

You don't need fancy equipment

This is one of the key things that I am always telling people as I think the impression of the equipment that Bloggers needs is varied. Some people don't want to start a blog because they don't have an expensive camera, photographer, fancy laptop and so on. If you have some amazing equipment, then great, you will be able to use this to help you create some really amazing stuff. But, if all you have is a phone and a free editing app, then that works too! You can still create some amazing and inspirational content so easily. I often use my Iphone to take Instagram pictures or blog photos and I always edit everything on my phone. The current apps that I am using to edit are VSCO and Light-room. These are both free apps that you can download and work perfectly for me! One piece of equipment that I would recommend if you're like me and don't always have someone around to help you take photos...a tripod. I use my tripod all the time and find it so useful. I bought an adaptor off amazon for my tripod which allows my phone to be attached and this was a great find. It allows me to take Instagram pictures with my phone and is a great little set up. I think that the perception of needing very expensive equipment is varied. I think that it's not a mandatory thing and people can 100% run a blog without it. I do think that nice equipment can create some really beautiful content but it's all down to the person and what they currently have or what they can afford. You need to decide what will work best for you and don't feel pressured into buying things because you think you need it. There are always cheaper alternatives that can work just as well!
